RARE old (late 19th-early 20th Cent.) and Large (37 5/8 inches) "Hybrid" Chokwe Female Power Sculpture from Angola. This Chowke Tribe Piece shows Songye Tribe aesthetic influence of decorative metal jewelry, studs and animal pelts (refer to https://www.clevelandart.org/magazine/cleveland-art-2009-highlights/powerful-forces) This Ritual Piece displays high ranking female (The Chokwes are well known for sculptures that celebrate their royal lineage note headdress and highly adorned jewelry). The present figure bears the classic pose and proportions of the famed Chibinda Ilunga corpus. The total symmetry of the standing pose is animated by the bent knees, the elbows held at right angles, the projecting head, breasts and hands. This piece can be dated to late 19th-early 20th century stylistically (The literature on power objects among the Songye, Luba, Luluwa, and Chokwe peoples reveals features of a shared culture. Among all four peoples some of the most frequently published and exhibited works, characterized by elaboration, large scale, and greatly refined and accurate anatomical and decorative detail, share religious and political dimensions. However, the production of such hybrid sculpture types was short lived and came to an end with the imposition of the colonial regime in the first decades of the 20th century, when the authority of the newly established centralized systems was curtailed by foreign powers. While these new elite forms of power figures waned, earlier forms, including nonfigurative and nonsculptural objects, did not disappear and in some places have survived to this day.) All carved from a single piece of dark wood- A beautiful, traditional object with good beautiful old usage patina in overall vey nice antique condition with older arm crack *see pic #7) -Size: 13 3/8"L x 37 5/8" H (33.97 cm x 95.56 cm).
