Museum Quality Bassa Maternity Figure-VERY RARE ca. 1890-1920's Liberia 30" w/ COA & Provenance -Pregnant Bassa Piece Heavy Scarification

Maternity/Fertility Sculpture with heavy scarification. This is an offering for an extremely rare carved Bassa figure brought back from Central Liberia in the late 1920's by a Christian Missionary. Authentic Bassa pieces rarely come to market and are considered the "Holy Grail" of African Ethnographic Pieces. This is wonderfully executed "very pregnant" knelling figure with a distended umbilical chord. Piece is extremely heavy (likely Ebony) and is covered in scarification Patterns (Scarification was used to deter slave traders from introducing the tribe members into the human trafficking stream). In addition to scarification, this sculpture has a point of special interest. There is an inverted lambic Pentagram on the back of the statue. Once the Christians entered area of tribal dwelling, they attempted to quash the "Pagan" movement and promote Christianity. All carved from a single piece of dark wood- A beautiful, traditional object with good beautiful rich patina in overall vey nice antique condition (has an indistinguishable professional repair to right hand). -Size: 29 7/8" H X 12 1/8" W (75.88 cm x 30.79 cm). These highly sought after authentic Bassa sculptures can easily fetch $10,000-$15,000.
