This is an oil on canvas shows a corner of a tavern with four gentleman, one smoking a pipe and blowing smoke onto a small dog with eyeglasses which is also smoking a pipe by Edgar Franklin Wittmack, an illustrator and cover artist for many popular magazines in the 1920s and 1930s. His covers, just like the artwork of Norman Rockwell, were usually created as oil paintings, but Rockwell could see the humorous aspects of small town life, while Wittmack dealt appealed mainly to male-oriented interests. He often painted heroic or action-type figures for the Saturday Evening Post, American Boy, Outdoor Life as well as for pulp magazines such as Adventure and Short Stories. The painting here depicts four men around a table in a tavern. It is signed in the lower right and has repair work on the back side. The overall size is 26 1/2 x 34 1/2 in .wide and the sight size is 23 1/2 x 31 1/2 in. wide. CONDITION: Craquelure, surface dirt, taped puncture repair in need of attention, otherwise good.
