Authentic antique (early 20th Century) African Large Idoma Janiform bust from the the intersection of Benue and Niger region of Nigeria. Very old and lightweight. Most Idoma headdresses are very baroque and busy. Large rounded head with circular eyes, cloth headdress, applied Size approx. 18 inches in Height + 1 1/4 inch included mount( total height 19.25 inches). The Idoma used numerous masks that embodied the spirits of ancestors that were used during funeral ceremonies, to cure illness and for fertility. Living at the confluence of the Benue and Niger Rivers, the 500,000 Idoma people are predominantly farmers and traders. Artistically, they have achieved a reputation for their female fecundity figures showing an open mouth with carved teeth and vertical keloids on the temples. The face is usually painted with white pigments – a stylistic characteristic also shared with the Igbo people. Statue in overall vintage condition with wood pitting Abrasions and old patina.
